1967 Yamaha SB-2 Bass Nippon Gakki (MIJ)

The Yamaha SB-2 was Yamaha's first ever electric bass, manufactured for a short period at the legendary Nippon Gakki factory in the late 60s. This is the real deal, not a reissue, however you'd be correct in thinking this bass doesn't look 55 years old. In fact, it looks fresh off the factory line. When we received this instrument it was in a pretty shocking state with thick overspray and a mangled pickguard, but it had great potential. We set about restoring this instrument, with the following work completed;

- Full body respray in original metallic white finish

- New 3 ply pickguard cut to original specifications thanks to "The Hairy-Dude" in Melbourne and his wicked pickguard creating abilities

- New electronics with CTS pots, Switchcraft output socket and vintage style dome control knobs, 2 volume 1 tone control layout

- New pickguard screws, strap pins and felt washers

- Fret dress and full setup with 45-100 nickel wound strings

The heart and soul of the SB-2 - the original single coils and the soft V birdseye maple neck - are intact and in fantastic original condition, as well as the original finish present on the face of the headstock which was our colour reference for the body. The neck is straight with no dead spots and the pickup output is healthy. The tone and feel of this instrument is simply fantastic. The neck pickup has a broad, full tone whilst the bridge pickup has the perfect honky cut through whilst still retaining the nice lower frequencies. The sympathetic restoration has brought the life back into this great instrument whilst still retaining the important original elements and classic 60s vibe.
