1970s Fresher FN-281 "Mercury" Competition Mustang (MIJ)

Fresher guitars first started in 1973 and were primarily a domestic brand of guitars and basses, made in the famous Matsumoto region with many models starting off as rudimentary clones of mainstream American and UK brand guitars. As the 70s progressed, the accuracy and quailty of these instruments improved vastly, with Fresher now a legendary name in the world of Japanese copies. The FN-281 was an early Fresher model crafted to resemble, you guessed it, a Competition Mustang. Being an early model however, the proportions, feel and features of this guitar are quite different from a genuine Mustang; Featuring a Jazzmaster style tremolo, on/off switching (instead of the usual phase switching) and oversized chrome covered single coils, this guitar definitely has its own unique vibe and look!

Featuring a relatively chunky U shaped maple neck and a 24.75" scale maple fingerboard, the neck feels fantastic to wrap your hands around and the guitar is extremely playable given its economic craftsmanship and age. The original Fresher single coils are sparkly and chimey with loads of top end and mid-range bite to fit well with a wide range of genres from punk to surf rock, pop to alternative.

Professionally setup and serviced with 10-46s, it's playing slinky with a comfortable action and pumps out some great vintage single coil tones! In 100% original and fantastic condition for its 50+ year vintage, this Mustang copy has received the works from us and is ready for another 50 years of playing! Frets are at a solid 98% thanks to a fret dress we've completed, and the guitar is free from any cracks, breaks or structural issues. If you want a quality vintage Mustang for a quarter of the price of a genuine Fender, look no further!
